The Allah Valley Landscape is the land area drained by the Allah and Banga Rivers system and their tributaries covering areas of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat Provinces. It drains into the Liguasan Marsh and is a major factor affecting the hydrological condition of this water body.
What is the Significance of the AVL?
It is one of the important sources of water from numerous streams, creeks and lakes in Mindanao. Major user of water is agriculture sector.
The AVL is a major agricultural production area that supports rice and corn in the lowlands as well as other high value crops such as pineapple and banana in the uplands.
The uplands and mountain ranges are spots of unique biodiversity and homeland of culturally-rich indigenous peoples.
Upland and Lowland Dynamics
One of the major concerns that have arisen in the recent decades is the effect of upland degredation on the lowland areas, particularly in relation to flooding, siltation, and riverbank migration along the valley.
Numerous lives have been loas as well as irreparable damage to communities and agricultural areas.
The Lake Maughan Floods
In 1995, 1995, and 2002, Lake Maughan/Holon burst its huge waters down along Allah river which affected more than 20,000 families, damages about 500 million crops and infrastructure facilities.
Eleven municipalities in the provinces of South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Maguindanao suffered from the heaviest damage.
These "great disasters" drastically changed condition of the Allah Valley landscape.
Siltation of Irrigation Infrastructures
Siltation has become a major cause of diminishing returns for irrigation infrastructure investments throughout the landscape.
Major rehabilitation efforts have been underway to revive the irrigation facilities of the Landscape.
