AVLDA and PEMO conduct Environment Symposium in Santa Cruz Mission School, Inc.

Poblacion, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato – Three Allah Valley Landscape Development Alliance (AVLDA) Program Management Office (PMO) staff together with Senior Environment Specialist Nencita Acain of the Provincial Environment and Management Office (PEMO), conducted an Environment Symposium which includes topics related to AVLDA and Climate Change. The said symposium, which was organized in celebration with the Philippine Environment Month, with the theme “Your planet needs you. Mr. Peter Carbon during his talkUnite to combat climate change,” was attended by around 300 teachers, school administrators, high school and college students of Santa Cruz Mission School, Inc. on June 19, 2009.

The half-day activity, which started at around 10 o'clock in the morning, began with a short invocation prepared by the students. After a welcome message from the high school principal of Santa Cruz Mission School, an orientation about AVL/AVLDA and various inputs on Climate Change were The students of Santa Cruz Mission Schoolgiven by Mr. Peter F. Carbon, Project Officer (South Cotabato) – AVLDA PMO. Participants also viewed a 12-minute video presentation about AVLDA. After which SES Acain discussed about South Cotabato progress on environment and several environmental The students during the invocation, an interpretative dancelaws/codes.

Students were given opportunity to throw their questions regarding the environment and climate change to the speakers during the open forum. The speakers thoroughly answered the students' questions like “Is there still hope for us?”, “How can we stop the ‘kaingin' system?”, “What programs on reforestation can we avail?”, “How to minimize the ozone depleting substances?”, and “What are some ways to know if any environmental hazard due to climate change is coming?”
