Tacurong City Conducts Series of Simultaneous Tree-Planting Activities (view photos)

Orientation on handling seedlings was given by Mr. Cedullo.Tree seedlings of mahogany, narra and bamboo trees were planted along the riparian zones of Tacurong City during the simultaneous tree-planting activities last June 17-19, 2009. The activities were done in support to the Riparian Zone Re-vegetation (RZR) Program. RZR or planting of trees and other vegetations along the river banks to prevent soil erosion aims to protect the riverbanks through vegetative protection, augment farmers' income through regulated bamboo poles harvesting and production of bamboo handicrafts, and develop awareness and promote public participation on environmental conservation. Around 21.1-kilometre stretch across 10 barangays in Tacurong City were identified as riparian zones.

Tree planting at Gansing CreekOn June 17, the NDF-ACDC PNP Tacurong and LGU Tacurong adopters planted 400 mahogany and narra trees beside the road going to DECELA at Brgy. New Passi, Tacurong City. At the same time, a total of 1,132 bamboo cuttings were planted by TACEMPCO, Dumaguil, FMPC, COTAMPCO, SUKELCOEMPC, Medical Mission, and DIAMOND MPC in the 2-kilometre stretch from Dumaguil downstream at Brgy. Rajah Muda, Tacurong City. Another 600 bamboo cuttings were also planted by AMCMPC, SRTTCCSK, San Pablo, SNMPC and SK Court CECC in the 4-kilometre stretch from Tacurong Bird Sanctuary upstream to Baras-Rajah Muda boundary.

EJC Montilla.The following day a total of 680 bamboo cuttings were planted along the Katungal Creek, upstream from Kapingkong bridge, along the New Lagao Creek, and along the Buenaflor Creek by the UKARBEMPCO, Lancheta FMPC, NITDOMPC, Five Star Trans Coop adopters, SK Multicab OMPC, SKPSC-FEIMC, MINPARBEMPCO, PAG-ASA FMPC, New Lagao FMPC, NTPSTECC and some local landowners.

The SMITEMPC together with SAFMPCO, the barangay officials and officials and employees of Tacurong City LGU planted 200 bamboo cuttings along Gansing Creek from the bridge there downstream on June 19. Also on the same day, Quipolot MPC planted 200 bamboo cuttings along Quipolot Creek.

Tree planting at Brgy. Baras.Other activities prior to the simultaneous tree planting activities were the Information and Education campaign headed by AVLDA and the City Cooperative Development Council held at the SMIT Conference Room, Tacurong City on May 15, 2009. Signing of Memorandum of Agreement between the AVLDA, LGU Tacurong City, and the Barangay LGUs of EJC Montilla, New Lagao, Upper Katungal, Buenaflor, Baras, Griño, Rajah Muda, D'Ledesma, New Passi and San Antonio was held at the Barangay Multi-Purpose Building of Brgy. Baras, Tacurong City on May 26, 2009. Site visits in the 10 barangays were also conducted by the Technical Working Group to identify and verify the areas for planting. On June 12, planting materials donated by the Sagittarius Mining Corporation were hauled from Tampakan, South Cotabato to the 10 participating barangays of the City of Tacurong by Mr. Jaime D. Cedullo, the City Planning and Development Coordinator, CENRO and Barangay representatives. On June 16, the TWG group had a follow-up sites visit to set things straight for the actual simultaneous activity the next day.

As stated in the MOA signed by various partners, there will be a periodic monitoring and evaluation of the areas where the trees were planted by the technical group of Tacurong City. Necessary trainings on Bamboo Propagation will be conducted to stakeholders. Plant nurseries are to be established in the ten identified barangays.
